Where are the CPT codes? Remember, CPT codes are copyrighted by the AMA, so you won't see complete lists of them on the internet. Some insurance carriers will  have a list of new CPT codes with "truncated" descriptions per AMA CPT guidelines.

New 2006 ICD-9 codes

2006 brings us 144 new ICD-9 codes.

The asterisk "*" indicates that these diagnosis codes were discussed at the March 31 – April 1, 2005 ICD-9-CM Coordination and Maintenance Committee meeting and were not finalized in time to include in the proposed rule.


New codes of importance are the new 276.x codes for dehydration and hypovolemia and 278.02 for overweight.

259.5 Androgen insensitivity syndrome

276.50 Volume depletion, unspecified
276.51 Dehydration
276.52 Hypovolemia is a decreased amount of blood in the body.
278.02 Overweight

Thrombocytopenia is a low platelet count. Thrombocytopenia is the term for a reduced platelet (thrombocyte) count. It occurs when platelets are lost from the circulation faster than they can be replaced from the bone marrow where they are made.

Thrombocytopenia may either result from a failure of platelet production and/or an increased rate of removal from blood.

For those who have been declaring, "hey but it's all muscle", Body Mass Index codes have been added. Whether insurance companies will acknowledge them is a whole other issue though. Typically, a BMI of 25 is considered normal for women and 18 is considered normal for men. A BMI over 25 is considered Overweight and a BMI of 30 is considered obese.
