Horticultural Therapy is closest to Get Fit Through Gardening in focus because we're more concerned about helping someone with bad knees, poor eyesight or limited mobility do something that is fun, meaningful and provides some measure of activity versus producing an award winning pumpkin, tomato or rose.
Where Get Fit Through Gardening differs is that Horticultural Therapy is primarily focused toward special populations with either a physical or mental disability. Get Fit Through Gardening aims at the fad diet and exercise industry with all their outlandish claims. My goal is to reach everyday people who are sedentary, overweight, depressed, lonely or bored with life. In particular, Get Fit Through Gardening offers an alternative to the millions of people who hate to exercise, don't like to play sports and hate to diet. Growing plants, vegetables, fruits, herbs, trees - anything - in an aerobic manner, offers something fun and valuable while providing much needed exercise.
The Horticultural Therapy Association offers a wealth of valuable information and resources for those interested in this worthwile profession.
