Pineal Gland:  A small, reddish gray, vascular, conical body of rudimentary glandular structure found in the brain.  The pineal gland produces melatonin and serotonin.

While CPT states in the Endocrine Intro Notes (for pituitary and pineal surgery, see Nervous System) there are NO references to the pineal gland in CPT Manual or the CPT Index. In addition, a search on "pineal" on CPT Assistant Archives CD-ROM does not pull even one reference to the pineal gland.

However, stereotactic radiosurgery, CPT Code 61793 is used to obliterate a malignant pineal gland.

So even though there is no way to find the pineal gland in CPT, or anyplace else, stereotactic radiosurgery, CPT Code 61793, IS USED for (non-invasive) surgery of the pineal gland. - Jeff
